Enclosing the flange is not always possible and where it is, the resultant clamp is extremely large and heavy for the piping system it is to be fitted to, this often results in the clamp requiring its own support.
STATS have developed a range of clamps that seal on the flange OD. The cavity between the gasket and the clamp is filled with a polymetric flexible grout, which fills the bolt holes around the studs generating a seal. The grout does not bond to the flanges or studs, it solidifies into a rubber consistency, with the deformation generating the seal. This allows the grout to be easily removed when the clamp is removed for a permanent repair. These clamps are normally used as a temporary repair to allow continued production until a planned shutdown.
