Enabling Critical Repairs Without Hot Work
Hi there.
When welding isn't an option - whether due to hazardous environments, operational constraints, or the simple need to keep parts of a plant running - you need a connection solution that's proven, permanent, and straightforward to deploy.
STATS Mechanical Pipe Connectors deliver exactly that. A cold work solution that eliminates the risks and delays associated with hot works, they require no specialist tools, no activation equipment, and no hot work permit - making them one of the most practical choices for piping repair, tie-in, and capping of redundant pipework across onshore terminals and offshore platforms alike.
Once installed, integrity is verified through integrated seal verification ports, allowing a simple pressure test to confirm a leak-free connection without additional equipment.
Configurations
We supply three connector configurations to suit the connection type required:
- Flanged outlet - connecting plain-end pipe to a pre-flanged termination
- Coupling - connecting plain-end pipe to plain-end pipe
- End cap - capping plain-end redundant pipework
Standard connectors are available from 0.75" to 36", with larger variants up to 60" available on request - a range that sets STATS apart where other mechanical solutions fall short.
In this issue, we share two project examples from Norway: a successful installation at an operating oil terminal where plant continuity was maintained throughout, and an offshore platform rehabilitation where STATS connectors enabled efficient connections on 18" and 24" drain systems in a challenging under-platform environment - with hot works completely off the table from the outset.
Read on to see how mechanical connectors can reduce the duration, cost, and risk of your next maintenance project.
Oil Terminal
Location: Norway
At a Norwegian oil terminal, 18" pipework needed replacing without a full plant shutdown. STATS mechanical pipe connectors made that possible - cold work, no welding, no hot work permits, plant running throughout.
Offshore Platform
Location: Norway
On a North Sea platform, 18" and 24" drain systems needed work in a tight under-platform space - hot works weren't an option, and competing suppliers couldn't meet the diameter requirement. STATS could.
Built for every material & environment
STATS mechanical connectors are suitable for topside, terminal, FPSO or subsea installation, and compatible with all process streams. They are DNV Type Approved and available to suit a wide range of pipe materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, super duplex, CuNi and Titanium.
Unlike existing alternatives that are limited in size range or require specialised installation equipment, STATS connectors are simple to install and provide a reliable, permanent connection. An integrated test port enables a leak-test to be performed once the connector is fully installed, negating the need for additional joint testers, reducing scope duration and costs.
Subsea Applications
Designed to eliminate the need for hyperbaric welding, SureConnect® subsea mechanical pipe connectors are equally easy to commission and install.
The SureConnect features a dual seal design with independent activation of seals and taper locks for efficient installation and seal testing. This subsea mechanical pipe connector is designed in accordance with recognised industry standards and guidelines, to provide safe and efficient cold connection in hostile operating environments.
In our case study, a damaged flange found mid-commissioning in the North Sea UKCS needed a fallback plan. STATS engineered a 14" class 2500 subsea connector - tested, certified and ready if the primary repair failed.
What's next?
A Safer, Faster Alternative to Welding
STATS mechanical pipe connectors provide operators with a proven, permanent cold work solution for piping tie-ins, repairs and system modifications without the risks, delays or operational disruption associated with welding.
Suitable for topside, terminal, FPSO and subsea applications, the connectors are designed for rapid installation with no specialist tools or activation equipment required, significantly reducing maintenance duration and project costs. Available across a wide range of sizes and pipe materials, including stainless steel, duplex and titanium, STATS connectors deliver reliable long-term performance in demanding operating environments. Integrated test ports allow leak testing following installation, eliminating the need for additional joint testing equipment and providing confidence in connection integrity. From plant modifications in Norway to subsea flange repair projects in the North Sea, STATS mechanical connectors continue to support safe, efficient and cost-effective maintenance strategies across the global energy industry.
