Delivering Safe In-Line Isolation for Critical Valve Replacement in the North Sea

STATS Group proudly supported a multi-party operation delivering high-integrity pipeline isolation services on a North Sea gas pipeline, ensuring safe access for an essential valve change-out.

This work scope involved isolating a 14” Gas Export Line offshore to enable the replacement of a passing ESDV, however the line had no pig launcher / receiver to allow installation of the isolation plug.

STATS was engaged to provide both in-line isolation and temporary certified launcher/ receiver package, a critical part of the overall work scope, ensuring a safe working environment by providing the client with a double block and monitor pipeline isolation.

STATS deployed a 14” Remote Tecno Plug® including a temporary pig launcher which included bends and a specially fabricated end connection to integrate directly with the existing #1500 hub on the pipeline system.

After a full assessment of the pipeline routing, bend radii, and internal diameter transitions, it was determined that the only suitable spot for the isolation location was a short straight section immediately following the ESDV and a 90° topside bend. Despite limited space, STATS confirmed that a Remote Tecno Plug® isolation module could be safely set within the available section. Due to the restricted straight length, the plug’s remote modules were configured ahead of the isolation module, positioned within the adjacent bend.

The Remote Tecno Plug® solution featured a dual seal configuration providing an annulus void for monitoring and proving seal integrity as well as an annulus leak test capability, ensuring both seals were fully leak-tight before any pipeline intervention begins.

This isolation methodology ensured maximum safety, no unplanned product release, and allowed works to be executed with confidence even in the most remote and challenging offshore conditions.

While STATS Group took the lead on pipeline isolation and temporary launcher package, this project benefited from strong collaboration with Prism Energy , managing the project, and Valvetight , who provided a solution to install the temporary Launcher package using their DBB-SAVER, ensuring a safe and controlled environment for the installation and reinstating afterwards. The success of this campaign underlines the value of a well-coordinated approach, with experienced specialists each delivering their part of a complex operational puzzle.

This operation not only protected pipeline personnel and infrastructure but also demonstrated STATS’ capability in delivering high-specification, fully certified isolation services under pressure.

As North Sea assets continue to age and infrastructure upgrades become more complex, safe, efficient, and reliable intervention services remain essential to field operations and production continuity.
