Job Purpose
The Manual Machinist is responsible for operating traditional manual machining equipment to machine a variety of finished and semi-finished components, tooling, and fixtures. This includes precise, hands-on adjustments using manual lathes, mills, and drill presses without computer control. The role requires a strong feel for manual operations, close attention to detail, and the ability to work on custom or low-volume projects in a team-oriented shop environment. A commitment to safety, accuracy, and adherence to procedures is essential.

Main Responsibilities
- Work from specifications, drawings, blueprints, and verbal instructions to perform machining operations.
- Perform standard shop calculations related to dimensions, tooling, and part geometry.
- Use a wide range of precision measuring instruments to maintain accurate dimensional tolerances.
- Follow company safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintain knowledge of all applicable safety protocols and requirements.
- Work collaboratively in a team-oriented production environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Foreman.
Individual Quality and Safety Responsibilities
- Comply with all STATS and/or client quality, safety, and environmental management systems and procedures at all times.
- Immediately report all accidents, incidents, near misses, or hazards to your manager or foreman and complete the required documentation
- Do not perform any task unless you have been properly trained and authorized to do so - when in doubt, stop and ask.
Qualifications
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and production documents (such as routers/travelers).
- Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated with a positive attitude.
- Should have, or be willing to obtain, standard personal tools required for the role
INTERNAL TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
As well as the essential minimum Experience and Qualifications requirements for you joining STATS (as detailed above in this Job Description) the internal training is tailored to complement each individual’s main responsibilities of this role. You will be assigned a skills profile at the time of hire, and this will include the additional training requirements to that of your Experience and Qualifications. The Skills Profile categories for your role are as follows:
- Critical safety and compliance training
- STATS induction training
- Tool and equipment training relevant to your duties
- Recommended development aligned with your position
This ensures all employees receive the support, knowledge, skills and resources needed to succeed in your position. Additional training requirements will be discussed with your line manager and may form part of the CPD process.
It is your duty to NOT undertake any tasks unless competent to do so. Please stop and discuss if in any doubt.
Experience / Competence / Skills / Knowledge
- 3–10 years of experience setting up and operating manual machining equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical principles and processes.
- Problem-solving skills; able to identify issues, analyze data, and contribute to group solutions.
- Solid understanding of safety procedures and best practices.
- Focus on quality; attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Adaptable and flexible; willing to work within changing priorities.

working conditions & physical requirements:
- Primarily based in a shop or manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, moving equipment, and varying temperatures
- Stands for extended periods and performs frequent bending, reaching, and manual handling of materials
- Operates lathes, mills, drill presses, and other manual machining equipment requiring precise hand coordination
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and maneuver heavy parts or tooling as needed
- Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with company and site safety policies
- May occasionally require overtime or adjusted hours based on production needs
